A marvelous ripening plantain. I like how sturdy they are.

I really feel that genuine twist and turn of the body of this fruit. And how it emerges out of the dark into it's shining light. A terrific tribute to your subject.
Hi Jala, I love coming to your blog and seeing what your up to. The play of light and shadow on the banana is great, really interesting. I also gravitate to "Sarah." She's very sculptural, not flat and deliniated.
I like the way the light hitting the banana makes it seem to 'emerge' from the canvas. Ooops, sorry, 'plantain'. Still, I love that gorgeous spot of color where the light hits it.
I'm a painter (and writer and Spanish instructor) living in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. I studied classical art in an ARC (Art Renewal Center) school, Colorado Academy of Art, full-time for two years, in order to benefit from the rigorous atelier-style training. I am currently dedicated to exploring abstract and semi-abstract art, working in oil and also in soft pastel. I firmly believe that all human beings are creative, whether or not they have yet found an outlet for the innate creative urge, and that the creative arts are the highest form of human expression. Hi Jala,

I agree, they're both really lovely paintings.

Hi Jala, Beautiful painting of this plantain with the curve toward the viewer, deep shadows and unfinished corners. Very appealing.
The sturdiness and shape really come through nicely here, Jala. Very nice handling of the shaded parts, too.
This is great. I too love the darkness to light quality and the twist of the plantain. Just wonderful!
Bonnie - Thank you. I loved its heavy twist/turn, too.
Susan - Thanks so much. Keep coming by!
Kathleen - Thank you!
Kelley - Thank you. That was my favorite part too, but I feel like I made it too yellow trying to get it to be really focal.
Janelle - Thanks. It's a *mysterious* plantain, dontcha know.
Brian M - Thank you. It had such an appealing shape, almost like some kind of sea creature...I don't know why, but that was how it struck me.
Joe - Thanks very much.
OOOOOh nice. I love the contrast between the warmer yellow side and the very cool shadow side. Nice. That green is awesome.
Thanks, Loriann! I wanted to do another version of the plantain, actually, but my husband COOKED it! The problem with produce as still life...ha ha.
i love that pop of saturated color amidst the muted tones. Masterful!
I love the dramatic lighting - beautiful job!
This is a beautiful little painting, Jala.
I love your painterly paintings... this banana is so dimensional I could pick it up. Really amazing portraiture, too.
Laurel, Edward, Bill, and R - Thank you so much! I felt like this one came out with a very "real" presence too.
