I've been much admiring Astrid's pastels. Inspired by her work, I decided I'd start learning how to blend--something I've never done. In my now ponderous experience (i.e., a few days), I am liking some of the effects that blending can give, especially when the painting is mostly blended, but with a few areas that are not. It feels like a good balance, the blending counterweighting the non-blended parts. The light-value part of the clouds here is not blended, giving it some visual texture, though you can't tell on screen.

Great pastel. As with all your works, the image/feeling pops up in the head, full of sounds and life as soon as I look at it. No need to read the name/explanation.
Is this cat ever moves? Eats? How can he keep this slim figure with such life style? I envy...
Hee hee, Irina, your comments about Rumi cracked me up. Well, the reasons he is so svelte are that 1) he's a kitten still; 2) I think he's part Siamese and he has a very long slender Siamese body; 3) when he's not sleeping (like, all night long), he is extremely active.

Hi Jala, very nice piece. I actually picked up my pastels myself the other day, and tried some blending. They are a beautiful medium for that aren't they. I found it was easier with the darker colours and I was working on tinted paper (dark ochre). I also like the work of Linda Carey (please Google her - don't have the link to hand). What make of pastels do you use please?
Beautiful depth in your sky study. From my monitor it looks as if the lightest portions of your painting are thicker unblended pastel.

i've learned i must have skipped finger painting, because a favorite thing to us is oil sticks, smoothing, layering, blending..with my fingers. i'll give pastels a try, and i like how you explained what you do, letting that cloud POP. thanks

Hi Rahina - Thank you. In the past I had done a few sky studies, but not recently.
Hi Sheila - Thank you. It's very addicting... I googled the artist and her work reminds me somewhat of yours (I like yours better; they feel more intimate and personal). My favorite pastels are the Unisons. When I had decided I wanted one full set, I decided on Unisons, and am very glad I did. I never tire of them. I think they have the best texture overall, and the colors are more subtle and interesting than other brands', in my opinion.
Loriann - Mojito says hi and asks if you can please remove the unwanted guest. That's how the clouds should look--on my screen they look a little TOO soft and blurry.
Hi Neva - Exactly! How many skies are there, how many mountains?... I have tried oil pastels only briefly, same with oil stick...didn't like either medium, at least not off the bat. I am really loving soft pastel though. I'd like to see the results of your experimentations, if you want to share them.

Like the effect you got with the blending on this piece, Jala. It can easily juxtapose into an underwater ocean scene, which is what first jumped into my mind when I saw it.
Hilarious photo of the animals; the expression on Mojito's face is priceless.
