Rumi update: trying steroids now in hopes he will gain weight. Miss Lemon--of course--refused to eat the special food. If the steroids work, the vet said Rumi could be weaned off them eventually, and probably only have to use them every now and then. Also if the steroids work, she said it will be proof that he does indeed have some sort of food allergy.

Sky 23 (pastel)

Pastel on PastelMat, approx. 9" x 7".

Art purchase inquiries: please email me: jala [at] jalapfaff [dot com].

It's been ages since I've done a pastel sky. I found a piece of PastelMat lying around and starting making marks with my always-favorite Unisons. Skies paint themselves on PastelMat.

Below: I want to thank Loriann for a great idea on cleaning pastels: a window screen and a hand vac do a great job, safely. I went to the hardware store and got a piece of flexible, soft window screen material. (Before I got the window screen, I admit I did try using a vacuum cleaner but accidentally sucked up a couple of half-sticks of pastel.) Cleaning the excess dust off a box of pastels now couldn't be simpler.

You know what I'm about to say, don't you? Yeah, "someone let the cat...

...out of the bag."

Yep. There was just nothing else to say about that.

Rumi update: Went to the vet today and we've decided that if possible, we'll try a food trial. My vet spoke to a cat internist who thinks Rumi may have somehow developed a food allergy. It will be the last thing to try before turning to steroids. The catch is that because we have six cats, all of them will have to be willing to eat the special food (because food is always available to all the cats) for eight weeks. I got a sample of the special dry food from the vet and will try it on each cat individually first.
I have a feeling Miss Lemon is going to be the one that refuses it. She is the pickiest one and also the only one who won't ever even try wet food, not even the occasional canned tuna treat.

[Edited to add: Ha, I just realized it looks like this guy is selling condoms. No, it's actually some kind of Indian snack packet. It's fun to see junk food in other cultures, isn't it? My favorite snack food there is fried lentils. Yum.

And when I lived in Japan many years ago, snack food was utterly mystifying and often (I'm a vegetarian) disgusting. Like little dried whole fishes with eyeballs and all.]

This one also is very new, and was sold during Open Studios. Thanks, Boulder peeps, for supporting your local artists!

I had just washed these little tomatoes and was about to eat them when I realized they look like a little Chihuly installation. Had to go get the camera.

I can eat them now.

The other day Fennec decided to climb the fit-ball that I was sitting on (in lieu of a chair when working at a desk)...with his claws.

It immediately ripped in multiple places and all the cats spent the next hour or so, fascinated and a bit scared, alternately running away and then coming back bravely to whack at it with a cautious paw, watching it deflate and listening to it hisssssssssss...

If you ever saw the old film classic The Red Balloon, well, it was kind of like that.

(Yes, it's dead and I had to order another one. I hope he stays away from it this time.)

Cats can cost you quite a bit of money in wrecked stuff, but at least they usually entertain you while doing it.

Untitled 158

Pastel on PastelMat, approx. 5" x 6".

This one's a personal favorite. I find it fascinating that sometimes vivid harlequin colors can all get along so well.

Boulder Open Studios is coming up again soon, the first two weekends of October. I have a lot of work to do in terms of organizing, framing, cleaning...lots of cleaning...oy.
Please come by during those two weekends if you are in Boulder!

I love how kittens can fall asleep in any position.

Mine never sleep as strangely once they're adults.

I can only imagine the gossip that must go on when the same bunch of women gets together every day for hours.

If you're in Boulder this weekend, come to the big outdoor festival Sat-Sun-Mon to our SLOWCOLOR booth and check out our naturally-dyed linen garments.

I suspect Gadjo will sleep through it.

With help from The Husband and from the Apple Store, I have a new hard drive in my computer and am (mostly) now back in business. Did you miss me?

...Or did you, rather, miss the animolecules?

It has been so awfully hot here. Very ready for fall.

Fresh catnip (it grows outside).

-----

Those of you who know me know how much I detest insects, spiders, creepy-crawlies in general.

I was out on the deck the other day and saw the animolecules all staring at something that was crawling on the dog bed. One of the most disgusting bugs ever--like a mutant wasp or something. I knew photographic evidence would be required. Fortunately, the animolecules showed good sense and didn't get too close.

Shudder.

Want some unsolicited advice? Never go into business with your spouse, especially if your marriage is already faltering, especially if you have major financial troubles already. It won't be pretty.

...But cats are pretty.

I ate one of these raspberries the other day. They were growing in an alley near our house. Man, was it sour! I don't know why. It looked ripe.
