Sky study 18

This one started out by my feeling bored with making blue-sky paintings and frustrated by a couple of skies that hadn't worked out. So I got that "screw it" attitude and decided just to put down some outrageous colors. Sometimes that attitude (the mentality of what have I got to lose, since it's all coming out bad anyway) creates good things. I ended up with a secondary-colors scheme, in spite of having given color harmony no thought. The darkest values are very dark green and purple. And then that final little touch of yellow-green--it was just crying out for it. Once I put it in, the painting resolved and I heaved a huge sigh of relief and was able to put the pastels away, turn off the lights, and leave the studio for the night.

Mojito looking bored...and scruffy.

In Jaipur. A historic cart wheel (not actually in use anymore).

Ah, the triad of secondaries, nice. Bored can be good.

Well, and even outrageous colors can be seen in our skies sometimes...likely near a petrochemical plant, but still...

I love this, Jala!

I love the paintings that come out of the 'screw it' attitude - and this one is no exception! There is such quiet drama here - who would think to use these colors - and they work perfectly!

Wow Jala - this one sings! Yep, it's what I tell myself too - what have I got to lose - it's just a piece of old hardboard and some tubes of weird stuff, LOL. Aw, lovely Mojito. How is it dogs look so dignified and wise when they are at rest.

Amazing as always! That wheel is too cool. i'm in this other group here at home and we're given a word a month and we have to create something that pertains to it. i sure could have used this shot...amazing. the cool blue tiles work so well with the wheel itself. Beautiful painting, amazing photos.

The screw-it attitude has hit me a few times and always with surprisingly good results. This result is gorgeous!

Jala,
Very cool painting, as always. Thanks for facebooking me. I haven't been on in quite some time so it will take me a bit of time to respond.

Hi Loriann - I agree.

Elizabeth - Thanks. Or in our minds.

Hi Kelley - Not all paintings that come from that attitude turn out well...but a surprising number of them do. The problem is that to get to that point, one has to make a lot of very bad paintings in a row.

Hi Sheila, thanks. Woof!

Suzanne - what was the word? Wheel? Just a guess. ;)

Hi Kristeena - Thank you. Also see my response to Kelley.

Hi Karen - Thanks. Facebook? No. I did it briefly a long time ago and then haven't been back on ever again. I think Facebook uses some kind of automatic software to "connect" people...even when they've stopped using it! Which is kind of creepy.

Love the bold colors you used on this one, Jala! Reminds me of the summer monsoon storms here in southern AZ during sunset.
