Monk James

Our renowned Ozzie snake-hunter model James, called in on a moment's notice to save the day when another model couldn't come, this time in a monk incarnation (or, variously labeled during class, "in his bathrobe" or "a young Yoda" [he does have those big pointy ears...]).

As on all your portraits, you've really captured the values and planes on this piece.

You really show his personality.I love his eyes and the way he cocks his head to the side. Beautiful color too!

Beautiful! I love the temp variations in the skind tones. BTW- How long was the pose for?

Pam - Thank you!

Loriann - Thank you. I managed to capture a likeness in the eyes and something about his expression, but I'm not thrilled with other aspects of this one.

Fabio - Obrigada!

Jeff - Thanks. I was fairly happy with the color on this one, though as always, if only I'd had more time...sigh. The alla prima portrait class is technically 3 hours, but it takes about 10 minutes to set up, then the model breaks for 5 min. every 15 minutes, so it pretty much flies by and feels like you're just getting the hang of things when, boom, it's over.

I love the way you model form with color!

From gym locks to water tumblers to thoughtfully executed portraits, you do it ALL.
And make it look heartfelt.
This is a great portrait- love the two lids that are so different and of course your use of skin tones.

Wow, Jala, beautiful and sensitive. Look at those flesh tones in shadow! Wow again! I didn't know you were such an accomplished portrait painter/figure painter!

I just visited your website and WOW. Such amazing abstract work in pastel, and fabulous oils... You are a great draftsman (PIC). Love the work, just absolutely love the work.

I don't do any portraits at present, but I especially love seeing them so well done by others.!

Once again, the colors you have used in this portrait are stunning! I love the ears - I assumed you didn't just make them up - and the expression you have captured is wonderful. Good luck with jury duty. When mine is over I will let you know about it. Very intense, I am afraid.

Kim - thank you! I'm trying.

Bonnie - Glad you noticed the eyes. His two eyes seemed almost not to go together in the same face, and when I looked closely, I think they were going in slightly different directions. The eye on the right side was looking right at me, and the other wasn't.

Kelley - You're too kind. And figure painting I have absolutely no experience with yet, so don't give me credit for that. :)

Patrice - Thank you so much. I just added the Rabbit Hole to my bloglist; how extremely fun to read your site is! And I adore the little closeup paw photos.

Leslie - Like other patriotic American citizens (tongue in cheek), I'm trying to get out of jury duty, we'll see if I'm successful. His ears really looked like that! They kind of weird me out now that I'm looking at the portrait rather than at him in life. :O

Yes you've got such a great expression going on here...and of curse the ears are fantastic. Really beautiful, and your colors feel daring here.
