For a long time, I've had the idea to do a series of pastels of this kind, to be called, simply, Color Samples. I've always been in love with any sort of color chips or color samples, from paint stores, color charts, and whatnot. What it's about for me is the intuitive choices of how hues interact and together create a certain mood. This is the first one.

Look at that perfect negative space between you and Lynx. You're like a mammalian parallelogram!
How funny are you two.
Eons ago, in art school, we learned something in color class called "fluting"- which involved choosing three sheets of Color Aid paper ( which I still love for it's total saturation of color ) and placing next to each other so that the center color at each edge took on the character of the sheets to the left and right.
A crappy explanation but I think it's what you're showing happens here too.
Looked at the word metamerism too but can't find the definition in my dictionary.
Perhaps your next post should be a painting featuring these colors? I like the palette!
Great idea, and a fascinating execution. The illusion of frames is wonderful, and I hope to see more of these.
We have 2 new kittens, BTW.
I love these sample. Whenever I'm in Home Depot I go to the paint section and look at all the samples!
Really like the clean look and the big white space. Very calming.
That little Lynx gets cuter all the time. The progression of photos has revealed more of his personality each time. This one cracked me up! That one cocked ear says it all. Too funny!
Jala are they in a frame (of white)? (Can't tell). Really interesting idea, and I like the suggestion of maybe using them in another work after you've assembled the samples.
The picture is hilarious!
The rectangles of color really show off the purity of color in pastels. I agree, a nice palette.
Maybe Lynx would have been more interested in a kiss had your breath smelled more like catfood. mmmm...

Bonnie - Metamerism? Sounds like a cool art exercise. I think that might be the kind of paper my instructor used for stuff in art school, too. I loved it. She said it fades badly though.
Leslie - That sounds much too planned for me...
Casey - I know that whenever I do something "radical" like this and YOU like it, then I must be on to something! Kittens?! Must see pics!
Pam - Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this habit. :)
Gwen - Thanks. Yep, cuter and cuter. His shocked little face here was SOOO funny...
Hi Karen - The white you see is actually the mat, with little "windows" cut out of it to show the "samples." Then I have a minimalist thin black metal frame around the white mat.
Hi Donald - If I had just eaten some cheese, he would've happily accepted a kiss, I think.
