Untitled 31 (diptych)

Okay, Blogger is weird and though I kept trying, I was unable to put these side by side as they should be displayed. So, the lighter-green one should go on the left, and the darker one on the right as a side-by-side diptych with a couple of inches' space between.

Hmm...maybe I should put them both up on the wall and photograph them that way. But I didn't...and now I'm posting. So oh well.

Each is 6" x 12", oil and cold wax on museum panel.

There's nothing Gadjo loves more than to insinuate himself between warm furry bodies and end up as the filling in an animolecule sandwich.

"...filling in an animolecule sandwich." HA HA HA!!! I love how Rumi is spying on them in the 3rd picture. Hysterical, all of them!

Looks like you've got your studio mojo back :). Interesting textural movement going on in these paintings - neat!

I can visualize fine, but would love to see together. Sometimes I have the same kind of posting issues, grrrr, but love these. Hope all is well with you and your husband and ani-mules!

Your paintings are fascinating!

When you say "museum panel," do you mean Clayboard (sp)? Is it cradled? And will cold wax stick to Clayboard, do you know? I've been reading that encaustic eventually peels off Clayboard so I wonder about cold wax. Do you prime with anything before you paint?

I think Gadjo got the butt end of that sandwich... LOL

Oh, I recognize these panels! Take my word for it... these came a long way, baby. Worth the trip. What gorgeous greens! You must be longing for spring.

All I can say, Gadjo, is you've got a lot of faith in Mojito.

Karena, thanks much!

Hi Sonya - Gotta love the animolecule sandwiches around here. Rumi was considering where he would fit in when he jumped down to join them.
This diptych is from the same night as Unfinished 30, so don't know if my mojo is really back or if it just made a one-night appearance.

Hi Tina, thanks, yeah, they do look really cool together...what is Blogger's problem? One of these days maybe I'll get it together to hang them and photograph them.

Hi Shelley - Thank you. Now, to answer your questions... Some of my oil + cold wax paintings are on Claybord and some on Gessobord. I use the deep-cradled ones (2" profile) because it looks so nice. As far as I understand it, the cold wax medium in this technique acts literally as just a medium--i.e., it mostly just evaporates. One doesn't even have to label them "oil + cold wax;" one could still truthfully just call them oil paintings, where the medium happened to include some wax. No priming needed, since what's going onto the surface is simply straight oil paint + the cold wax medium. Hope that is helpful.

Hi Sam - Why would I be longing for spring? Do you think it could have anything to do with it being about 3 degrees F every day lately?
Thanks -- You knew they weren't done when you saw them. And you were right.

Kim - thank you! I love those adjectives, I'd love to think that's how other people perceive this work...I guess you could say it's what I'm aiming for, if you also add the adjective "subtle" in there. :)

Thanks, Jala, for your explanations about Claybord (I thought that was how it was spelled but wasn't sure) because I bought several 2"cradled panels to try out the cold wax and oil combo, so phew! You are inspiring me to experiment more!

Don't know if I ever told you but I love, love, love seeing your wonderful animal family.

Gorgeous work, Jala - I love how the colors in these panels relate to each other. I was surprised when I saw the dimensions - they look like they'd be huge.
