For fun, I tried copying Richard Schmid's portrait Sapphire...but in miniature. The head in this is only 2.5 inches high! Click on it for a bigger (approximately life-size) view.

He's my favorite contemporary portraitist. I highly recommend his book Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting.

Amazing, Jala. How on earth did you get so much info into such a small format. You've got his brushy style replicated. I so admire your ability to do these practice copies with such skill.

I love small works. I forces you to move closer to the painting.
You do good work. I hope I can one day pick your brain about Atelier training. I have always wanted to do that. Where I live there is nothing of the sort. Toronto is the closest and that is 5 hours away.
