Boulder Creek November

A mini: 4" x 4". It's cool to see how a rough ground on panel contributes to it feeling like a print.

Lynx and Rumi in a rare (and slightly uncomfortable-looking) possessive embrace.

In India.

Jala, I love your use of color in these paintings. The textured ground (did you use marble dust or pumice for this? I'm sure you mentioned it earlier and I've spaced it out...) like that would normally drive me nuts, but it is an asset for showing off the underpainting so nicely here.

You move between media, surfaces, high and low-key paintings with such ease; this is so different than the last oil and cold wax painting, which was also wonderful. But, both clearly show your personal style.

The "possessive embrace" - heheh. I've seen that before. It usually leads to the embracer unable to resist the urge to start biting the head of the embracee, thus resulting in a biting and kicking each other session, esp. if there are humans watching. I miss that, not having 2 cats anymore.

Handsome texxxture, but doesn't it eat your pastels?
Like Lynx eats Rumi?

Chomp.

Very, very nice works. Are you sure you don"t pose Lynx and Rumi? Too adorable for words.

Beautiful work Jala, I could see this painted on a very large canvas!

Hi Sonya,
Thanks for your kind, and fun, words! This was the Lascaux pastel ground, which is like gesso with pumice included. It's interesting trying these highly textured grounds...they give such different effects from the normal pastel papers.
I feel like I am still trying to figure out what my artistic voice is. Sometimes I wonder if maybe by the very end of my life, I will start to have some bare inkling. It doesn't FEEL like moving between them with ease...it feels more like a restlessness and dissatisfaction. :(
SO right about the cats...hahahahaha...that's exactly what always happens. The "embrace," then the head-biting, then the kicking, then finally one of them launches out of the chair to get away. Very fun to watch and they do love an audience for it.

Sam - Indeed it does eat the pastels, the texxxxture. Chomp.

Karen, thank you.

Hi Anita, thank you. Pose a cat? Really? Is such a thing possible??

I did think it was a print when I clicked on the thumbnail. You must be using the lascaux in a very thick manner. Is it underpainted with acrylic?
Nice feel to the painting.
As for voice, I don't think you have to worry. Your voice is deep inside your heart, right now your brain is struggling with an abundance of thinking. That's OK. And very normal. Trust yourself. You are a very talented artist...trust.

Lovely, Jala - I like the color here very much and the texture, too. It feels very complete in a satisfying sort of way.

I wonder about my artistic voice a lot, too, but wind up just plodding along. Maybe someday it will be there or perhaps I'll realize at some point that I had a voice all along and just hadn't realized it...
